Frequently Asked Questions
What does the REAL lab mean?
REAL lab is a nickname for Research in Education and Learning Lab.
What is the database and what does that mean?
Our database is the way we organize and keep track of our participants for our studies. By joining our database, we will have the information needed to contact you and ask you and your child to participate in an upcoming study we have.
Once I join the database will you call me for every study?
We will only contact you for the studies in which you qualify for.
Does that mean my child will have to participate in the study?
Definitely not! While we would thoroughly appreciate your and your child's participation, it is not mandatory. If you or your child does not feel comfortable, we can call again with another study in the future.
How long does the study take?
Our studies range in time, from 15 minutes to an hour. Even for short studies, we schedule for hour-long appointments so you can fill out some paperwork and your child can get comfortable in the space.
What is the study about?
The study dives into how children learn, with emphasis on children's curiosity, question asking, spatial reasoning, and learning from play.
How old does my child have to be to participate?
We typically look at children between the ages of 3 and 8.
Do I get paid for participation?
If needed, we can offer compensation of $10 for your travel. All children who come to the lab - even siblings! - will receive a small gift, such as a book or a toy. Additionally, children who participate will receive a certificate.
Will you remind me?
We will call you the day before to confirm that the day and time of your appointment still works for you.
Will you tell me how my child did in the study?
We won’t be able to tell how your child did until we look at the videotape, and even then, we add your child’s results to the data of every other child who participates in this study to get general results of children the same age as your child. However, once the study is complete, we will email out an update to all families who participated.
Will this study tell me if my child is on track or gifted?
We do not offer diagnostic testing for that.
I have other children. Can I bring them too?
Absolutely! We have a play room where the whole family can hang out. They will even get a thank-you gift for their patience!
How many visits are required?
Most studies require only one short visit to the lab. We usually have multiple studies running at different age ranges, so if you’re interested in participating in more than one study, we’ll be able to call you in the future. However, you are under no obligation to come again.
Is there parking available?
Yes, there is free parking in a lot outside of our building
